Roy Janik
Well, our new manager came in to our office, and told us that we're not going to be fired. So THAT'S good news.

Roy, I don't mean to sound alarmist, but I mean this in all honesty: You may wish to re-think buying a house right now. Being told you won't be fired means SOMEONE is, and that could mean that they'll shut you down in the near future. You've already been re-absorbed by IBM; just watch your step.

They announced last week that IBM is laying off a few thousand people. I'm guessing this was news from their management that they're not included in unlucky group.

Anytime someone comes in to say "Nothing's wrong!" in the corporate world, something is definitely wrong. But it doesn't necessarily have to be right there.

Re:

Well, it's a small thing, but they didn't say "nothing's wrong". She said, "As you know, IBM's restructuring resources." We laughed, and she said, "Well, yeah, everyone knows that means layoffs, but I wanted to let you know that you're not affected."

So there was at least no pretending going on.

It's a danger, sure. But the market's also good enough now that it shouldn't be hard to turn around and sell the house without much of a loss. I know it's a risk, but I can't live my life in fear. And I don't know when I'll ever have absolute job security. IBM's as about as stable as it gets these days.

IBM, maybe. But Tivoli? If you're confident that you could re-sell it, though, then go for it.

Does "absolute job security" exsist?
