ain't nobody here but us chickens [Jul. 11th, 2002|10:59 am]
Roy Janik
Chicken show went well. We actually ran out of time before we got to play all of the songs, which is pretty amazing considering we had 2 HOURS. Cha-chee, Chi-chi, Nicole, and I were there in the flesh. Mindy and Brendan called. We didn't have a ton of callers, but we did have quite a few. It would seem, however, that monkeys are more popular than chickens (duh). We did have one lady call and tell us that chickens were way better than monkeys, so maybe there's room for debate.

Whadya think? Cows next week? It'll be back to 1 hour, so it should be easier.

origin

where did that phrase come from? "nobody here but us chickens" My parents used to say that all the time whenever someone came to the door. and I swear I heard kermit the frog say it once or twice. what is that from?

Re: origin

This is the earliest reference for it I could find, from the early 1940's:
"Songs like "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" [...] appear at first glance to pander to racist attitudes. On closer inspection, they use racist stereotypes - in this case, chicken thieves and unemployed, drunken revelers who owe back-rent - to infer questions about the intellectual capacities of a mainstream culture that could perpetuate such nonsense. The chicken farmer is so dumb he never realizes that chickens don't talk."</I
