I finally took James's advice and went to the 1st Thursday Celebration down on South Congress. To catch you up to speed, all the shops along S. Congress stay open really late on the 1st Thursday of the month. They give away free beer, there are bands, and artists set up booths in the parking lots. It was actually a lot of fun, and drove home the fact that I really like this city. There were actually ton of people there, and everyone seemed happy. Nicole, Mindy Leigh, and I wandered around, weaving in and around antique stores, hippies, bands, and aging hipsters. It was beautiful. There was even a band playing on a stage in front of an auto mehanic's shop. And there were t-shirts for the mechanic for sale. And speaking of t-shirts, one of the stores had "1st Thursday" t-shirts, as well, with the slogan "Fight to Save Old Austin" or some such. You've got to admire any sort of cause that requires you to drink and listen to music in order to support it.
hek-tor once described me as "desperately cheerful". This was sort of like that. Everyone was having a great time, in a very Austin way, because the alternative is unthinkable and unnaceptable.
