Hmmmm.

Interesting puzzle.. just the kind of thing I don't have the time for these days, and will now suck away my life.

If I print out this picture, will the message still be there?

What if I print it in color?

Sweet! Congratulations! The hint was always there. Lemme know exactly what tools you used.

Re: Not impossible... but was that hint always there, or did you add it this morning?

Well, since I didn't see the hint until I was done and posting my reply using lynx, I first toyed around with the image using strings, pgpv, etc, with little luck. I then used 'stegdetect' to determine that the image was, indeed, stegano-tized, 'stegbreak' to "crack" the password, and then tried to use 'outguess' to extract the hidden data, but it couldn't seem to do it. So, since 'stegdetect' told me you'd used jphide to store it, I got jphide/jpseek to extract it.

Booger. I felt much cooler before I realized you'd put that hint there.. if I'd seen the hint, this would have been all too easy. :)

Re: Not impossible... but was that hint always there, or did you add it this morning?

Awesome. You solved it the way I actually intended. I only put the hint in there because as far as I could tell, there was only one tool, stegdetect, that could figure out there was a message, and only one tool, stegbreak, to crack the password. Furthermore, I was doing everything on Windows, and I had to do a lot of work to get stegbreak to work. It needed a word file from a unix box, so I had to copy one over, and it kept looking for everything in default unix directories.

The funny thing is, I actually had to go out of my way to make the message decipherable. The original image couldn't be processed by stegdetect, because it didn't like the format that Photoshop wrote the JPG in. If I re-saved the image with ifranview, it could at least process it. Also, originally, the image was completely grayscale. Stegdetect couldn't figure out that there was a message in it, though. I remembered reading something about the way it works, by counting the frequencies of colours or something, so I added the random noise background. Suddenly, stegdetect worked.

Also, originally, the password was "donuts", but it took stegdetect far too long to break it, so I got bored and changed the password.

Anyhow, the moral of the story is, it's pretty easy to steganographically hide a message and escape stegdetect's watchful eye.

Also, I think I'm going to write a pretty GUI interface that can easily make use of stegdetect, stegbreak, and the other tools necessary to decrypt/encrypt a message.

Oh, my bad. I thought the clue was that the guy in the picture was a French postman from the WWII era. I guess the hat threw me off the trail.
