well, that was geeky, even for me. [Nov. 11th, 2002|11:16 am]

For some reason or another, I really like the new Joss Whedon show Firefly. I seem to be the only one, considering the fact that it was beaten out by America's Funniest Home Videos last week. Yes, it's a Space Western. And yes, the trappings of spaceships and lasers have been largely unnecessary so far. But there's something about the crew dynamic, and the hack-need sense of loyalty and honor (among thieves) that I can really get into.

Anyhow, my point is, I've been recording the show, and missed two episodes so far, including last week's, since I screwed up programming my VCR.

Well, now thanks to IRC, a CD burner, and a DVD player that can also play VCDs, I have those two episodes, in pretty good quality, too.

Geeky? Yes. Illegal? Sortof. Neat? Yes.

Thanks for getting my back!

TV Guide's reviewer seemed quirkily-favorable, if somewhat non-committal. It ends on a hopeful note that I hope Fox takes to heart...
"To survive, these anti-authority figures must fly under the radar. Unfortunately, Firefly's willful weirdness appears to be consigning the show to a similar fate in the ratings. Let's hope Fox exercises some patience. Cult followings aren't born overnight."

Official website -- Give it some hits, who knows, maybe they will think its popular enough to keep. The weblog's pretty funny. The captain seems to be a witty guy in real life.

What I like is that seems to be a pretty carefully designed world with specific limits, rather than an open-ended exploration of every sci-fi possibility one can come up with (see Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, Sliders, Farscape, etc...). Also, I like the games the writers are playing with morality (prostitution as a respected profession, a general disregard for religion, etc...). Of course, this probably is another reason why the show will lack general appeal.

If it *does* get cancellend, there's a possibility that Sci-Fi would pick it up. But I'm they would somehow ruin it. Probably by throwing in aliens and dimension-hopping opera singers.

Man, I sure tried to get into that show, but it just didn't grab me. Sorry. The effort was there.
