Being a computer programmer by day (8+ years at IBM. woo?), I often get asked if I can help solve some sort of technical problem. Last night, both Bill and Jeremy from the Available Cupholders were having issues... Bill with compiling some code, and Jeremy with embedding video in Wordpress. The interesting thing is that I didn't know how to solve either of these problems. But through using Google, and a little bit of research, I was able to find the solution to both on the first try.

It seems like cheating to me, sortof. I mean, did any of my CS skills really come into play? The answer, the more I think about it, is "sort of". Solving problems like these usually involves finding someone in an online forum who had a similar problem, and then seeing what the answer is. But you've got to know enough about the technology to see if 1) it's actually the same problem, 2) the answer makes sense, 3) the answer is the best of all the answers offered, and 4) it really worked. Plus, you've also got to know what to search for, I guess.

Anyways, it's nice to be able to help.

The major skill Computer Scientists have is the ability to look at problem, and fix it. Isn't that what coding is all about?

That's why we computer geeks like puzzles and games and RPGs and quests. It's how our brain works. :)

Yay for CS geeks!

This just reminded me of the time I had you look at my computer, and the first thing you said was, "Well, the first problem is the resolution of your monitor - luckily, I know how to fix this."

If you have a recent version of Wordpress, it's kinda built in, but if you're using something older...

"In SiteAdmin go to Users and turn off “Use the visual rich editor when writing” then go back to your post and past the Embed code provided by YouTube."
from here: http://www.shandyking.com/2006/06/19/embed-youtube-videos-in-wordpress/

I presume that'll work for videos other than YouTube, too. Let me know if it works.
