milk will make me strong, you say. [Dec. 4th, 2008|12:20 pm]
Roy Janik
Kaci and I have been watching LazyTown lately. If you don't know what it is, don't look it up. You'll hate it.

ANYhow, there's a song that the chirpy young heroine sings called "There is Always a Way"... a pretty common theme in children's  shows/songs/workbooks/whatever... that you should never give up and keep on trying, because if you persevere, you can always find a way to succeed. It's a nice enough sentiment, and I do agree that by and large ACTING like there's always a way will serve you well... but sometimes there just isn't.

This lesson was driven home forcefully to me with the milk challenge. The challenge is to drink a gallon of chocolate milk in an hour and keep it down without throwing up. It seems like it can be done. Everyone thinks they can do it. But you can't. You just can't do it. You will make yourself sick, and you be a damned fool. I watched 20 people in the Knighthood of BUH try it and fail. And everyone who we told this cautionary tale to later on said "*I* could do that easily." They can't. You can't. Right now you are thinking you can, but you can't.

So yeah. There's not always a way.

I believe the challenge was a a full gallon in an hour. Not sure if anyone kept a half gallon down, but it was definitely at least drunk.

I drank and kept down a little more than a half gallon of non-fat, so it was kinda cheating. But I had eaten half a head of cabbage just before, so that balanced it out, in a way, kinda.

I think this is a good strategy for feeding children as well. Consider it.

Chocolate milk challenge is the least regrettable disaster of my life. After chugging probably about 3/5 of the gallon in about 5 minutes and worrying that my stomach was actually going to rupture, I went out into the Parlin bushes and had a cool, smooth, chocolaty vomit that wasn't any worse coming up than it was going down. And I immediately felt fine.

That reminds me of that dare to eat 6 saltine crackers in one minute, one cracker at a time, and no drinking allowed. Sounds possible. It's not possible.

It is possible! My friend Joseph did it!

Did you see him do it? One cracker at a time, no water?

Yes! I think I even have it on tape somewhere, it was at one of the BUH challenge week events.

This milk challenge seems pretty doable to me. I might just have to try it. (As long as I can persuade someone else to buy me a gallon of milk and some syrup.) Does it have to be whole milk or is 2% good enough?

Our official rule was that it had to be store-bought chocolate milk, not white milk with syrup added. That being said, the people who "cheated" and added syrup to white milk still couldn't do it.

That makes the process somewhat easier, then. No mixing required.

I like chocolate milk, but not a gallon in an hour...

Did you ever try it?

That was a real pearl of wisdom from BUH. Well applied!

I tried it the week after most people tried it, so I kind of knew in advance it was impossible. I just drank like 1 litre of chocolate milk and stopped, so my experience was rather delightful.
