Choose My Own Adventure [Jan. 5th, 2010|12:13 am]
Roy Janik
Here's an idea I just had. I want to write a Choose Your Own Adventure novel about my own life... write the first and longest path just as a biography that leads me to exactly where I am right now...

and then go back and play "what if" with all the choices I didn't make.

Would this be depressing or inspiring?

Maybe a little bit of both.

"You're a big boy, Roy." says Mr. Jefferson, your 7th grade Physical Education instructor. "What are you doing in P.E.? You'd do great at football if you're interested in transferring."

If you choose to take the coach up on his offer, turn to page 78.
If you choose to laugh and say "Nah, I'm okay here", turn to page 80.

I... am a little in love with this idea.

PS. I turned to page 80.

That's pretty nifty.

Is ChooseYourOwnLifeAdventure.com taken?

Nice. I started but deleted a decade-reviewing post. For 2000 I mentioned that as dumb as the reason for breaking up with you was I think it worked out well for both of us in the end.

I'd still love to see that post sometime if you ever write it.

I love McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, and that project sounds like something they would publish.

That sounds like a really fun idea. Also, ChooseYourOwnLifeAdventure.com won't load anything for me (with or without the sextuple-u.). Although really the project can only work because in your case the path that gets you out of the creepy carnival is the true one. Anything less and it would be a maddening path into depression.

Fascinating. And also freakish because I was thinking about choose your own adventure books in the shower the other morning and wondering if you could do that as an improv format, and then that lead me to wonder more about improv, since I know it mostly as "Whose Line"

Not only can you, but I have done it as an improv format. Early about 3 years ago I created an ad-hoc group called The Dark Bloodlords, and we did a Choose Your Own Adventure format.. Someone (usually me) would be the narrator, acting like I was reading a CYOA book. A scene would play out and occasionally I would go to the audience, give them options, and have them clap for the one they liked best. We'd then explore that option. Sometimes we'd kill off the hero and backtrack just for fun, especially if the audience chose something really stupid.

I for one will say I'm glad you turned to page 80.
